but the mountains of the past
imagine this: ghosts, vampires, werewolves – all exist. although their existence isn’t out in the open or widely known of, many people (especially some residents of new orleans) are forced to deal with them on a daily basis.
the hauntings are mere metaphors for the characters' own displacements of themselves: those who are plagued by ghosts are also plagued by their own self-created fears or guilt stemming from past actions; vampires are merely characters overcome with a depression so severe that they literally walk the line between life and death; ghosts themselves are those who were too scared to move on with their lives and welcome change; succubi and incubi are those who are looking for a deep connection with someone else and, furthermore, with themselves – unable to find it, they take all they can from the person they were trying to find love with until there's nothing left; those who are seers, carrying the burden of the ability to see into the future and to see what others can't see, are searching for a purpose in life, unable to find one without seeing that the future might bring them some semblance of happiness; and werewolves are those who are repressing themselves from truly living, and therefore need to thrive off of the lives of others to survive themselves. these, the very things that make us human, are taken literally to create this world where the supernatural appears the be the natural and normal is all relative.
of course, many people who haven’t been affected by a being of the sort don’t know about the supernatural, instead choosing to believe that those creatures are just confined to scary stories and horror movies; those who have come across a supernatural being tend to keep quiet about it for fear of being considered crazy by others. that’s not to say that people don’t enjoy the idea of a haunted city – new orleans, louisiana has marketed their supposed haunted houses and scary cemetery tours to tourists and residents alike for many years.
